Welcome to the Campaign of Paul E. Nelson For Colorado

Hello, my name is Paul E. Nelson. I am running to represent the people of Colorado House District 36. I want to focus on what matters — and that is securing the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our future generations.

I want to represent you in the areas of cost of living, home affordability, and securing our communities with safety, amongst many other topics. Whether you lean to the left or to the right politically or you are an unaffiliated voter anywhere in between, I have the responsibility of representing you and finding common ground with wisdom.

I’ve lived here for 33 years. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Liberty University, and I have developed my faith in God. I’ve worked in food service, landscaping, and warehouse jobs. I understand what matters to families every day with the cost of living, home affordability, the cost of healthcare, distrust in government, the safety of our communities, and caring for our loved ones — whether they’re a child or a grandparent.

We face the same fundamental matters today for why the people of Colorado 150 years ago gave us the framework and the platform by writing our Constitution Preamble, which says these words:

Preamble of the Colorado Constitution

What that means to us today is this:

We the People of Colorado — we are the highest authority in the land, only under God.

With profound reverence for the Supreme Ruler of the Universe — that speaks to faith and morality as the foundation of our society.

In order to form a more independent and perfect government — a government that truly serves the people and is self-sufficient.

Establish justice is talking about fairness between individuals and entities.

Insure tranquility is equal to safe communities and domestic peace.

Provide for the common defense — that means protecting our state, our freedoms, and our way of life.

Promote the general welfare is talking about addressing the cost of living, home affordability, healthcare, and education.

Securing the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity — protecting the Bill of Rights and Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR), personal responsibility, and the health of our families and the future of our children.

When I take the oath of office, I will swear to uphold the Constitution and serve the will of the people — because government is our servant, not our master.

That is why I am asking you to send me into this office to represent you — to protect our Constitutional Republic, our freedoms, and our liberties.

I want it said of me that we can trust Paul E. Nelson with our vote to represent us because we know he will stand for us with the virtues and on principles of wisdom.

If this message resonates with you, I humbly ask — if you live in House District 36 — please vote for me, Paul E. Nelson, because I’m focusing on what matters.

I also humbly need your financial support to connect with our fellow constituents and get the message out that there is a candidate who is truly focusing on what matters to the people of HD 36.

May God bless you. And may God bless the great State of Colorado.

The Numbers and the Actions of the Past and Current Legislative Body Don’t Lie

While families in House District 36 face rising costs and uncertainty, the Colorado state legislature’s spending, revenue decisions, and policy choices over the last eight years have produced unsustainable results.

$16.5 Billion
General Fund Revenue (FY 2026)

This is the actual tax revenue the state collected from Colorado families and businesses.

$17.4 Billion
General Fund Spending / Expenditures

This is what the legislature actually spent on programs and services.

$1.2 – $1.5 Billion
Structural Budget Shortfall

The legislature spent more than it raised in revenue. We the people ultimately pay the bill through higher future taxes, reduced services, or more debt.

20–40%+
Property Tax Increase (2026)

Many Colorado families, including those in Aurora and HD 36, saw their property tax bills rise sharply this year after temporary state relief measures expired.

3rd & 8th
National Crime Rankings

Colorado ranks 3rd worst in the nation for property crime and 8th worst for violent crime — directly affecting neighborhood safety in HD 36.

Top 10
Most Expensive States

Colorado’s cost of living and housing prices rank among the highest in the nation, making it harder for working families in Aurora to afford basic necessities.

Where I Stand

As a neighbor in Aurora and candidate for House District 36, I know the issues that keep families up at night. These are my clear, uncompromising priorities — the commitments I will fight for every day in the State House.

Lowering the Cost of Living and Making Homes Affordable

Working families in Aurora should not have to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table. I will fight to cut red tape and block state mandates that make housing and everyday expenses more expensive for our neighbors.

Restoring Public Safety in Our Neighborhoods

Families deserve to walk our streets and send their children to school without fear. I will back full funding for our police, support tough consequences for repeat offenders, and put the safety of Aurora families first.

Real and Permanent Property Tax Relief

Aurora homeowners and renters are being squeezed by rising property taxes. I will work to deliver lasting relief — not short-term political Band-Aids that disappear after the election.

Solving Homelessness While Protecting Our Neighborhoods

We need real solutions that get people into treatment and off our streets. At the same time, I will fight to protect our communities from the crime and disorder that come with unchecked encampments.

Putting Parents and Children First in Education

Every child in HD 36 deserves a strong education. I will defend parental rights, expand school choice, demand curriculum transparency, and insist on high academic standards that actually prepare our kids for the future.

Fiscal Responsibility and Living Within Our Means

The state cannot keep spending more than it brings in. I will demand that government live within its revenue, stop raiding reserves, and return more money to the hardworking families of Aurora through permanent tax relief.

My Vision for House District 36

I believe government should be limited, accountable, and serve the people — not the other way around. My vision for HD 36 is a district where families can afford to live, work, and raise their children in safe communities, where our constitutional rights are protected, and where common sense prevails over government overreach.

1. Lower the Cost of Living & Make Housing Affordable

Reduce regulations that drive up housing costs, oppose tax increases, and support policies that put more money back in the pockets of working families.

2. Restore Safety in Our Communities

Support law enforcement, back the rights of victims, and implement tough consequences for repeat offenders. Safe neighborhoods are a fundamental right.

3. Protect Parental Rights & Improve Education

Parents, not the government, should decide what their children learn. We must prioritize school choice, parental involvement, and excellence in education.

4. Defend Our Constitutional Rights

I will always stand for the Bill of Rights, the 2nd Amendment, free speech, and the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR). Government must remain limited.

5. Promote Fiscal Responsibility

Stop wasteful spending, reduce the size and scope of government, and ensure every tax dollar is spent wisely and transparently.

6. Champion Individual Liberty & Personal Responsibility

Every Coloradan deserves the freedom to succeed through hard work. I will fight against policies that create dependency and instead promote opportunity and self-reliance.

Why This Race Matters

In the Colorado House, one seat can be the difference between a legislature that works for families and one that no longer has to listen. Right now, Democrats hold 43 seats — just one away from a supermajority that would let them pass any bill without Republican input or a governor’s veto. House District 36 is one of the most important battlegrounds in the state.

Stopping a Supermajority

A Democratic supermajority would remove the last check on one-party rule. Flipping HD 36 helps keep the balance of power so no single party can ram through extreme policies without compromise.

Protecting Thoughtful Governance

We need representatives who will defend the Constitution, promote the general welfare, and insure domestic tranquility — not ideology-driven bills that ignore working families in Aurora.

Giving Voice to Unaffiliated Voters

Nearly half of the voters in HD 36 are unaffiliated. They want practical solutions, not partisan extremes. This race gives them a real seat at the table.

Defending the Families of Aurora

Every policy decision made in Denver affects our neighborhoods, our schools, our safety, and our wallets. HD 36 deserves a fighter who will put Aurora families first — every single day.
